The Department of Spatial Design & Consumer Studies held the “AIoT Smart Home Interior Special Lecture” from Aug. 11 to 12 at Myworkspaces in Gangnam, Seoul.

The special lecture was designed to strengthen smart space design capabilities through practical education integrating spatial design with AI and IoT technologies. AIoT education institution Sunstar and smart home company AqaraLife provided the training, with 30 students from related majors, including Spatial Design & Consumer Studies, the School of Information, Communications & Electronics Engineering, the Department of Artificial Intelligence, and Media Technology & Media Contents, participating.

Students learned about the concepts and design methods of AIoT smart homes and the latest application cases, then used a dedicated IoT design program to directly design automated environments based on spatial scenarios. They also participated in hands-on activities using actual devices, such as Aqara IoT kits and smart lighting, to control devices via smartphones and implement user-customized automation scenarios by connecting sensors and devices.

After the training, students visited the Aqara showroom to explore examples of AIoT technology being applied to actual residential spaces and experience various smart home environments firsthand. In particular, students had the opportunity to directly install the door/window sensors, motion sensors, smart lighting, smart switches, and other devices used in the training in their own living spaces, creating IoT environments tailored to their individual lifestyles.

Meanwhile, an AIoT laboratory, the first of its kind among spatial design-related departments at universities in Korea, is currently being established in Dasol Hall and is scheduled for completion in time for the start of the 2nd semester of the 2026 academic year. In addition, the university will establish the “IoT Smart Home” course, the first of its kind among spatial design-related departments at universities in Korea. The course will be offered in the newly established AIoT laboratory.

The Department of Spatial Design & Consumer Studies plans to continue expanding education that integrates spatial design with AI and IoT technologies, nurturing practical convergence talent capable of responding to changes in smart spatial environments.
