Professor Hye-Sun Jeong of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Catholic University College of Medicine Appointed as Advisor to the National Policy Planning Committee
Professor Hye-Sun Jeong of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Catholic University College of Medicine was recently appointed as an advisor to the Social Affairs Division 1 of the National Policy Planning Committee.
The National Policy Planning Committee serves as a body that replaces the Presidential Transition Committee when a new government takes office. It is responsible for designing the overarching direction and major tasks for the next five years of national governance and can be considered the "policy design office" that concretizes the government's philosophy and vision.
Professor Jeong will serve as an advisor in Social Affairs Division 1, which covers six key areas closely related to the lives of citizens: health, welfare, women, labor, human rights, and veterans. She will be active in both the labor and health teams, contributing to the development of policies related to occupational safety and health.
President Lee Jae-myung has emphasized “respect for life,” “ensuring safety,” and “equal opportunity” as core goals for national governance since his candidacy. These are not mere slogans but reflect a commitment to embedding human-centered values into policies across all sectors.
Professor Jeong’s participation aligns with these principles, and she is recognized as a practical expert capable of reflecting on-the-ground needs into national policy. She is expected to play a key role in building a more precise and effective national system for health and safety.
Regarding her appointment, Professor Jeong stated, “I feel a deep sense of responsibility to be involved in designing the core governance tasks of the nation,” and added, “I will strive to incorporate the voices of the field into policy to ensure that the lives and health of citizens are protected.”
Professor Hye-Sun Jeong is a highly regarded expert who has long conducted research and practical work in the field of occupational safety and health. She earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Seoul National University and her doctorate in public health from Seoul National University Graduate School of Public Health. She currently serves as a professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Catholic University College of Medicine.
She is also the president of the Korean Federation of Health and Safety Organizations and has served as a bridge between the government and private sectors on various issues such as occupational health, industrial accident prevention, and infectious disease response. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she actively engaged in research and advisory work to protect health in schools, public institutions, and industrial sites. As head of the Gyeonggi Province Integrated Health Promotion Project Support Group, she led diverse initiatives to improve the health of local residents, earning recognition as a professional with both expertise and practical insight.
Her appointment is expected to bolster policy efforts in the fields of medicine, public health, and labor by addressing overlooked issues and ensuring that the protection of citizens’ lives and safety remains at the center of national policy. The Catholic University College of Medicine will continue to fulfill its mission as a leading institution in future healthcare policy, alongside faculty committed to social responsibility across various fields.
