[Academic Support Team] Criteria for Major Assignment for 2026 Freshmen of the 2 Major Broad Fields

This notice provides the criteria and procedures for major assignments for freshmen admitted under the 2 Major Broad Fields (Humanities & Social Sciences / Natural Sciences & Engineering) for the 2026 academic year.




1. Target Departments & Capacity Limits

Students admitted to a broad field can select any major within their respective fields when advancing to their sophomore year, except for specific excluded departments.

  • Available Tracks: * Humanities & Social Sciences Broad Field: All departments within the track (Excluding Special Education, Global Business Campaign departments)


    • Natural Sciences & Engineering Broad Field: All departments within the track (Excluding Pharmacy, Music)

  • Major Assignment Capacity Limits:


    • For departments with a quota of fewer than 30 students: Up to 200% of the department quota.

    • For departments with a quota of 30 students or more: Up to 150% of the department quota.




2. Timeline & Application Method

  • Application Period: At the end of the 1st year, 2nd semester (Under the standard academic calendar, around late December).

  • Method: Apply online through the Integrated Portal Information System (Trinity).


    • Students can submit up to 4 choices in order of preference (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th choices).

  • Eligibility: In principle, students must complete two regular semesters to be eligible for assignment. (Students who take a leave of absence during their 2nd semester must apply after completing the semester upon their return).

  • Result Announcement: Finalized by the end of January before the start of the sophomore year.




3. Evaluation Criteria & Scoring Weight

The placement is determined by a combination of academic GPA and extra points earned through career exploration activities.

  • Placement Process: If a student is not assigned to their 1st choice due to capacity cutoffs based on the scoring system above, they will be sequentially evaluated for their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th choices.

  • Tie-Breaking Rules: Detailed sorting methods for competitive majors will be finalized and announced following the preliminary major preference surveys conducted during the academic year.
