Search operators are categorized into basic operations (Boolean Operations) and advanced operations (Advanced Operations).

Representing Boolean Operations

Boolean Operations are search operators that specify logical relationships between search terms for efficient and accurate searches. They include the AND, OR, and NOT operators.

Operators How to use Description
AND operator [&], [ ] University& Library or University Library Find results that contain both the keywords "university" and "library".
OR operator[|] University | Library If your search contains either "university" or "library," we'll find it. You'll get more comprehensive results.
NOT operator[!] University ! Library Searches for results that contain "university" but not "library". This NOT operator is very useful for excluding unwanted documents from the search results by search terms.

Representing Advanced Operation

Advanced operators are search operators that allow you to refine what you're searching for to get more precise results. These include wild and broad match.

Operators How to use Description
Wild operator [?], [*] university* Get results for all keywords that start with university, such as "university" or "college clubs" or "college classes". Used as a backward truncated search.
Semantic expansion operator [@] magazines@ You can search for synonym extensions of the keyword magazine in the search engine's thesaurus to get more comprehensive results. The search results for #magazine# are the same as the search results for magazine | journal | magazine | newspaper | journal | newspaper | magazine.
