• University Professor in the Top 100 Outstanding Accomplishments of National Research and Development in 2021

  • Professor Chun, Heung-jae of the Department of Medical Life Sciences of the University has been included in the “Top 100 Outstanding Accomplishments of National Research and Development in 2021” for his technology development of biodegradable polyester material used for medical purposes. His team has been recognized for making its way into the international market by developing the manufacturing technology of medical biodegradable polyester material, attaining its international certification, and signing an export contract.




      This material used to be unfortunately imported under a monopolizing supplier at a cost 2,000 times higher than the industrial one due to the condition that it should have the medical grade certification for it to be sold. Chun and his team thus identified the toxicity and instability of the new and existing home products to acquire the manufacturing technology of a polymer material that is in line with the international standard. They then concentrated on their study of mixing materials and improving the process and quality. 



      In the end, they succeeded in developing a stable and effective absorbent material, which received accreditation from CRO and NAMSA in all of the areas. The three materials (PCL, PLCL, and PGTMC) have acquired theProfessor Jeong, Yeon-tae ISO13485 and granted the team the manufacturing technology that satisfies the international standard. Based on this, for the first time in the country, Chun’s team has successfully made their way into the American market by signing a long-term supply contract on the medical biodegradable polyester material.




      This study took place for 8 years from 2013 through the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s Strategic Core Material Technology Project and gave 22 SCI-grade theses and 24 patents along the way, contributing to the acquirement of exclusive technology in the field of medical material and tissue engineering.
