  • The Catholic University of Korea sent an international volunteer group to Laos with the opening ceremony of the 18th International Volunteer Corps at the Chapel of the Sacred Heart  in the morning on May 5.

A group of 60 people, including faculty and students, will volunteer at the Koknai elementary school outside Vientiane, Laos, for up to 15 days, 8 days and 10 days.

The International Volunteer Corps will provide local elementary school students with education such as health, science, music, craft, Taekwondo, and Korean. In addition, the school will repair the school's facilities, including repairing the roof of the classrooms, repairing the toilets, and building new children's toys.

Fr. Won Jong-chul, the president, emphasized, "Service is a good opportunity to lead a mature life beyond merely helping someone" at the opening ceremony, and encouraged the members to "Always practice humility and practice the spirit of sharing and love."

The Catholic University has been sending volunteers to Papua New Guinea since 1997, and has been using volunteer activities in developing countries such as the Philippines, Uzbekistan, Mongolia and Cambodia.
