  • Professor Jeong, Yeon-tae of Korean History Department was awarded the 15th Im, Chong-guk Award for his recognized work of setting a preemptive direction in his study age of colonization, “National Discrimination of Colonization as Everyday Occurrence: From Middle School to Employment.”


     

    The award was established by Im, Jong-guk Memorial Society to mark Im, Chong-guk (1929-1989) who pioneered in researching the issue of pro-Japanese sentiments and correcting the past wrongdoings. Since 2005, the award has been given to individuals and organizations that live up to the values of Sir Im's ideals that are the elimination of pro-Japanese sentiments, realization of justice, and establishment of national history.



    Professor Jeong, who is awarded in the field of academics, majored in the modern history of Korea and has been mainly studying the colonial agricultural policy of Japanese colonization, characteristics of colonial modernization, and history of national discrimination for the past 30 years. His book "National Discrimination of Colonization as Everyday Occurrence: From Middle School to Employment" identified not only the legal and structural national discriminations during the Japanese colonization but also the aspects, structures, and traits of customary national discriminations unconsciously happening on a daily basis due to social and cultural prejudice and hatred.



    The judges of the society evaluated that the professor’s book provided the readers with specific examples to effectively show the reality of national discrimination, setting a future-oriented direction to colonization studies. Moreover, he was recognized for his active participation in the protest against the government’s plan to standardize the history textbooks back in 2014 when he was the president of the Korean History Society.
