  • ▲CUK Department of Social Welfare Professor Kim In-sook’s “Institutional Ethnography: Theoretical Foundations and Practices,” selected as the “Excellent Academic Book of the National Academy of Sciences” CUK Department of Social Welfare Professor Kim In-sook’s “Institutional Ethnography: Theoretical Foundations and Practices” was selected in the category of the social science in the “2021 Excellent Academic Book of the National Academy of Sciences” in recognition of its academic value.



    The “Excellent Academic Book of the National Academy of Sciences” has been selected by the Ministry of Education and the National Academy of Sciences since 2002 to revitalize research and publication in basic academic fields. 265 books were selected for this year’s academic publications: 67 in Humanities, 95 in Social Sciences, 35 in Korean Studies, and 68 in Natural Sciences.


    “Institutional Ethnography: Theoretical Foundations and Practices” by Professor Kim In-sook that was selected for Excellent Academic Book is the first publication to introduce the systematic institutional ethnography methodology in Korea. It has been highly praised for its contribution in providing a basis for new knowledge production by attempting to systematize institutional ethnography that had not been systematized into a methodology.


    Professor Kim In-sook said, “Institutional ethnography is a qualitative research methodology that can be applied to all academic fields with interest in interactions between people and institutions, such as medicine, nursing, and education as well as social welfare and social policy. I hope the ‘Institutional Ethnography: Theoretical Foundations and Practices’ can be useful for researchers interested in how the institutional order is created and how it intertwines with people’s experiences.”


    Meanwhile, the selected books, including Professor Kim In-sook’s “Institutional Ethnography: Theoretical Foundations and Practices,” will be distributed to university libraries nationwide in the second half of the year after surveying the demand of each university.
