1-person creators bloom at the Catholic University of Korea!

Meet our young creators with captivating stories of youth!

    YOLO Studio

Jung Hee-eon (Department of Media Technology & Media Contents, Class of 11)

I started YOLO Studio because I felt was moving away from the trends of younger people, while I dream of becoming an entertainment PD. I figured I could make some breakthrough if I directly communicated with teenagers and people in their 20s, who are the mainstream YouTube viewers. I guess that thought led me to create YOLO Studio. There are many stories of youth in YOLO Studio, but the most popular content is about friends of the opposite sex, which I created based on a Korean drama drama called “Fight My Way.”

Ever since the show got popular, there was heated interest online on peoples stories regarding friends of the opposite sex. It got me thinking, Oh, this could be another trend. It turns out that this became a hot issue among teenagers and those in their 20s, and I saw through that. It helps a lot to experience various genres such as TV ads and dramas and study content if one hopes to plan projects like this better.

Many people dream of becoming YouTubers, but I dont want to restrict my content to a single space. So, these days, rather than obsessing over view counts, I try to better direct my content with better style and composition. I hope to become a director by developing my capabilities via YouTube.

Dive deep into the friendly everyday life of a true insider

    Donggeurimi

Jeong Ye-rim (Major in Mathematics, Class of 17)

I have never tried video editing or planning. Then, when I was thinking about what content to try, I came up with this idea: Why not share my everyday life with people? So, I decided to depict my life at the Catholic University of Korea, which is close to my heart and a fun part of my life. I enjoy every moment at school. Difficult major subjects are more interesting if I study with my friends.

Eating, playing, and rolling down Smurf Hill on a sunny day makes me happy. Its even fun to walk down the library during exam times. I also added travel logs to the channel. My favorite place is Jeju Island. It is less expensive than traveling overseas, and I can escape from reality and relax, gazing at the natural scenery. Id love to recommend Jeju to my friends who are tired from studying and trying out extracurricular activities. Jeju Island is a wonderful destination for both short and long-term trips. Its emerald-colored oceans alone are so emotionally soothing, just when I look at them.

My goal is to become that friend who subscribers can visit anytime when they are down. I try to regularly upload content and not lose this energy. How sad would it be if someone looking for a friend visits, only to find there arent any? Im planning studying content and Hong Kong travel content for winter vacation. Stay tuned!

B+, Common little stories of common people

    B+ Psychology

Ko Eun-bin (Major in Psychology, Class of 15)

As I learned more about my major, I felt that the awareness on psychology counseling was lacking. I further realized that we needed to focus on the outside of the center and not inside, if we were to truly help those who need psychology counseling.

YouTube was a way to connect with many people without being tied to the limits of time and space. I wanted to provide counseling by reaching closer to someone, and I thought subscribers would feel closer to me. B+ literally refers to something between A and B, which is the most common grade students receive. It is that kind of common.

I named my channel B+ because I think psychology counseling should be common and close, rather than far away. Many people these days share stories about why they are depressed and sad, and they dont know what theyre feeling. I believe this happens because people do not have a clear understanding about their minds. In other words, they fail to give enough time to understand themselves. Society is partly responsible, forcing people to only run forward. If you feel like you dont know yourself, it is better to look into yourself, rather than blaming yourself.

If I have a chance, I would like to create discussion-type content by inviting professors or outside speakers. In the future, I hope to become a marketer who can introduce and sell products to the public based on psychology. I plan to take media marketing-related courses through the double major programs of the Catholic University of Korea. YouTube, eventually, is one of the pathways to my dreams.

Two Makes Better Planned Beauty Contents

    Doori-Beauty

Kim Min-Jeong (Major in Business Administration, Class of 13), Kim Hye-hyeon (Major in Philosophy, Class of 11)

We met when we were working for the student council, and soon discovered that we were both interested in beauty and planning to become YouTube creators. So, we decided, why not try it together? The benefits of a 2-person channel is that different types of creators are seen together. Especially, beauty is a field that brings out vastly different evaluations depending on peoples skin type, tone, and current status. Our channels strong point is that we let viewers compare those differences through a single channel. We can provide subscribers with more accurate and ample information.

Having two creators also make the videos less boring. With only a single speaker present, the content may drag. However, we are able to catch each others mistakes and realize more solid and structured content. YouTube is full of various content, but most of them are beauty related. So, we also operate daily communication-based content called Gonggam-duri. It is one of our own ways to get closer to subscribers. We are also attempting to differentiate our content with videos shot from various angles, rather than relying on similar angles popular among other beauty YouTubers.

Other than working as YouTubers, we are also pursuing our dreams. Every day is a busy challenge with career planning, school studies, and makeup research, but we are happy because we are doing what we like with our friends.

Dreaming of a Peace YouTuber, a Communication Channel between the Two Koreas

    Ddo-hyang TV

Park Soo-hyang (Major in social welfare, Class of 14)

It has been already 9 years since I settled in South Korea. My daily conversations with people often make me realize that they still dont know much about North Korea. Ive decided to become a YouTuber to help people get to know North Korea better and change its negative perception. I created a community called Urion with friends, whose motto was a gateway toward unification.

The community grew to accommodate more than 7,000 members, but I continued to ask myself if there were any engaging ways to help North Korean defectors settle in the South. Then, I thought YouTube would be a great platform. I thought that if I openly shared my identity as a North Korean defector to the public, they would perceive content related to North Korea and its people in a friendlier way.

As a soon-to-be graduate, my dream is to become a bridge of communication between the Koreas. I aspire to change peoples conceptions about North Korea to more positive thoughts, even if my efforts as a YouTuber have little impact. We need to know much about and understand each other if we are to become friends and brothers. I hope to play that crucial role.
